The Manager Routine That Prevents HR Fires (Without More Meetings)

Most HR escalations begin as small issues: attendance drift, performance confusion, interpersonal conflict. A simple manager routine prevents “surprise” crises.

HR Anchor: A lightweight HR routine: 1:1s, documentation, and escalation rules that reduce conflict and compliance risk.

Weekly (10 minutes per team member):

  • What went well? What’s blocked? What’s next?

  • Capture 2–3 bullet notes (facts, not opinions)

Monthly:

  • Review attendance/timekeeping exceptions

  • Confirm training and policy acknowledgments are current

  • Identify any role changes that affect classification or pay practices

Escalation rules (write them down):Escalate immediately if there is a complaint involving harassment, discrimination, threats, safety, or wage-hour disputes.

Why this works:Documentation creates clarity. Clarity reduces conflict.
